YouTube Rewind 2018

YouTube celebrates the most successful videos

There’s no escape from the sheer number of annual reviews that are published every year. This year, YouTube with YouTube Rewind, looks back on the most successful videos of the year.

Find out with us who is up there, why the format is being criticised and which YouTube videos are at the top.

YouTube Rewind Names Most Successful YouTube Stars 2018

Since 2010, the video platform YouTube publishes its annual review every December. Titled “YouTube Rewind,” the video platform looks back on the year’s most important viral videos, events, trends, and music releases. With more and more content being produced for YouTube, it is not surprising that the number of creators involved is increasing every year. For example, YouTube Rewind 2018 featured 112 video stars. These were from a variety of disciplines, including music, film, gaming, vlogs, and animations.

While there has been repeated criticism of the format over the past few years, this year’s YouTube annual review is making a great many negative headlines, since its release on December 6, 2018,. Within a few days, the video became the clip with the most “I do not like” information. It replaced the music video for Justin Bieber’s “Baby”. This has collected since its release in 2010 (!) 9.9 million “Like” data (as of December 14, 2018).

YouTube Rewind 2018 in the review

Currently, the YouTube annual review recorded 2.2 million Likes. On the other hand, there are eleven million “dislikes” (as of December 14, 2018). Add to that the criticism of the format from the media and from different YouTubers. For example, Swedish YouTuber – Felix Kjellberg – better known as “PewDiePie” – made fun of a video about this year’s YouTube annual review. Also this year PewDiePie was not one of the featured YouTube stars. He has 76 million subscribers, which is now the most successful private channel on YouTube, and has created his own reaction.

Other top YouTube stars of the year, such as Shane Dawson or Logan Paul , will not appear in this year’s YouTube Rewind. For example, Shane Dawson’s eight-part video series about Jake Paul is one of the most discussed videos in social media. It’s pure irony that this year’s YouTube review of the YouTube community is so bad. Actually, the format is supposed to be a video for the community to honour the most successful YouTube stars.

YouTube Rewind 2018 becomes a promotional video

The biggest criticism of this year’s YouTube Rewind video is the selection of videos and content creators shown. Instead of controversial videos or the almost legendary boxing match between the YouTube creators KSI and Logan Paul, YouTube’s annual review of 2018 focuses on video platform contributions. Or to put it another way: The clips used are primarily intended to stimulate advertising partners to advertise and serve only as a further marketing tool. In this respect, the criticism from other YouTuber is understandable.

But there are also content creators who praise this year’s YouTube Rewind on social media, including Thomas Ridgewell, better known as TomSka on Twitter.

The fact is: a review of the year like YouTube Rewind 2018 is always subjective and there will always be people who do not like the content. Nevertheless, one should not forget the origin of the format – namely the highlighting of the most successful YouTubers of the year. And that was not enough for this year’s YouTube Rewind version.
