What is Netflix?

To use the service you have to sign up for Netflix first. After successfully signing up, you can log on to the website and get going. You can immediately access all movies and TV shows that are offered on the site. Nowadays most TVs are equipped with smart TV functions. This means that your TV is web-compatible. Many smart TVs also have the Netflix app preinstalled. You just have to access the app with your remote control, enter your login details and can immediately watch all movies directly on your TV. Alternatively you can use your TV’s USB port to turn your device into a Smart TV, i.e. with the help of Google’s Chromecast stick. If you don’t own a TV or cannot make your device web-compatible, you also have the option to stream Netflix on your computer or laptop. Simply type in the Netflix website into your browser, allowing you to instantly access the service on your device. To use the streaming service on your mobile phone or tablet, just download the Netflix app from the iTunes or Google Play Store.

Movies and TV shows to watch on Netflix

The popular streaming service is known for its wide range of movies and TV shows. Netflix UK adds new shows and movies to its site every month. But: Experts are generally calling the website’s selection expandable. This is mainly due to the fact that it is harder for streaming services to buy the necessary licenses for movies and TV shows in Europe than it is in the United States. Compared to other services Netflix has the advantage of offering many so called Netflix Originals, which are shows and movies self-produced by the streaming service. These include for example shows like “House of Cards”, “Orange is the New Black” or “Narcos” and a big selection of kid-friendly entertainment to choose from. Unfortunately, there is no transparent list of Netflix’ range of shows and movies. But after signing up for a free trial month you can easily navigated through the selection and discover the right movies and shows for you. Another option is the website justwatch.com to get a quick overview which streaming service offers you favorite TV shows and movies.

Netflix down? Here’s what to do!

As with all online services there is the chance that the Netflix website will occasionally not work. You can check the current Netflix server status for disturbances on https://help.netflix.com/en/is-netflix-down. If you are experiencing a disturbed image not sometimes, but most of the time, or if your movie frequently freezes and pauses, there could be a problem with your internet connection. Sometimes it is sufficient to restart your wifi router. If the speed of your internet connection is weak in general however, this is a more severe problem. The service provider recommends 0,5 Mbit/second as the required speed to stream content. To watch movies or TV shows in HD or Ultra HD quality, this quickly requires 5,0 or 25 Mbit/second though. This should not be a problem when you use your wifi connection at home, but portable devices such as your mobile phone or tablet might struggle, especially if you have used all of your included monthly data volume.
